PDC referee Huw Ware has revealed a unique personal link to the hit television series Gavin & Stacey, with his family home situated right at the heart of the show's iconic setting in Barry, Wales. Speaking to talkSPORT, Ware recalled how it all began on Trinity Street, remembering being in his nan's sister's house there when she told them, "Oh, they're going to start filming a new TV show across the road in a couple of weeks." At the time, this felt extraordinary for the town, as Ware noted, "We all thought, 'Oh, that's very exciting,' because nothing like that ever happened in Barry."
Only later did they realize what was unfolding on their doorstep. "Turns out it was Gavin and Stacey, so my auntie lives opposite Stacey and Gwen's house," Ware explained. The connection went even further, placing his family directly within the show's most recognizable backdrop, as he added, "She lives next door to Bryn on the other side."
One particular memory stands out for Ware involving the transformation of the street for a festive episode. "One of the Christmas specials, they knocked on my nan's sister's door and said, 'Would you mind if we put up some Christmas decorations in the middle of the house?'" he recalled. The timing made it surreal, as Ware noted, "It was in the middle of July, and they paid them a bit of money to do that. They said, 'Yeah, sure, no problem.'"
When the series finally aired, the reaction in Barry was one of curiosity. "When Gavin and Stacey first went out, all of us in Barry tuned into BBC Three just to see Barry on television," Ware said. At that point, no one had any idea what the show would become, with Ware emphasizing, "We had no idea what the show was going to be like." For Ware, these memories remain a fond reminder of how a quiet Welsh street unexpectedly became part of British television history, long before he went on to make his own mark on the world stage in darts as one of the PDC's leading referees.
