RON MEULENKAMP QUALIFIES FOR 2026 UK OPEN AFTER CHAOTIC LIVERPOOL AMATEUR QUALIFIER

Ron Meulenkamp has secured qualification for the 2026 UK Open in Liverpool via the amateur qualifier route, marking his return to the PDC stage after a long absence. The Dutchman recently signed a deal with Mach Darts Management, which also represents Danny van Trijp and Gian van Veen, and explained, "We've put a plan together. The idea this year is basically to play as much as possible." Since failing to obtain a Tour Card this past January at Q-School, his focus this season is on the Challenge Tour, aiming to "play a lot, gain plenty of match rhythm."

Meulenkamp described the qualifier in Liverpool as a chaotic throwback to pub darts, with six boards and 130 people crammed together. "It's terrible," he said with a smile. "Everyone was on top of each other. They were playing pool two meters away from you. Lovely for a Sunday afternoon." He noted the lack of modern conveniences: "It was the 58th match before I had to play. After that I was up 24th. You had to keep track of everything yourself. Nowadays you'd think: there'll be a screen to follow along. But here you had to monitor it all yourself." Despite the chaos, he found charm in the atmosphere, comparing it to playing in a local pub with forty or fifty people, complete with "shouters behind you, local heroes, established names."

The tournament followed a knockout format with best of 7 legs and a best of 9 final, where only the winner qualified for Minehead. Meulenkamp had tried earlier in Manchester on Saturday but was eliminated early; in Liverpool, he said, "I'd played three, four matches and thrown really well. Felt great." He survived several deciders, winning four matches 4-3, calling it a "mega rollercoaster. Tight matches." In the final, he led 4-0 but faced nerves, thinking, "I can't find treble 20 anymore." He regrouped, saying, "Back in the single one again. Just calm down. In the end, I managed to pull myself together," and won 5-2, celebrating as "those pool balls went flying for a moment."

Qualifying for the UK Open holds significant meaning for Meulenkamp, aligning with his season goals. "These are the things you hope for when you set goals together," he stated. He expressed pride in his management's faith, which boosts his confidence, especially after recent successes like winning the B ranking of the Nederlandse Darts Bond. His mission for 2026 remains clear: "Either it's a good lesson and rhythm, or you win it. The goal is simply to play a lot of matches."
