MICHAEL SMITH BLASTS MICKEY MANSELL'S SLOW PLAY: 'HORRIBLE MENTALITY AND HORRIBLE PLAYER'

Michael Smith unleashed a furious tirade against Mickey Mansell after a 6-3 defeat in a European Tour qualifier in Hildesheim on Thursday, February 12, 2026, calling him a "horrible mentality and horrible player." The loss came in the final hurdle for qualification to the Poland Darts Open, scheduled for February 20-22, following two prior days of Players Championship action. Smith was so incensed that he withdrew from the subsequent qualifier for Gottingen later that day.

On his Facebook page, Smith lambasted Mansell's slow play, stating, "Imagine doing that to win a game. Tinkerbell won’t come along and move your darts for you. No need stand looking at the board for 15 seconds. Horrible mentality. And horrible player." He emphasized his frustration as a quick player, noting that Mansell's methodical pace—taking 15 seconds between throws to retrieve darts—particularly perturbed him.

Smith also shared personal struggles, posting pictures of his swollen ankles to document issues exacerbated by travel, such as flying to Hildesheim for a ProTour double header. He explained, "Just want to show what happens now when I travel and what the pressure of the plane does to me. It’s not sympathy or anything it’s just annoying because I put myself through this to play the sport I love and just infuriates me, I have to deal with tactics like that." He added that this swelling occurs after flights and will likely persist, questioning why he endures the pain to please others over his health.

Among other qualifiers for the Poland Darts Open were Cristo Reyes, Connor Scutt, Ritchie Edhouse, and Jeffrey de Graaf. The article notes that Peter Wright will miss his first European Tour ever, though Smith did not comment on this directly.
