Mitchell Lawrie has become the youngest ever world number one on the WDF amateur circuit at just 15 years old. The emerging youth phenomenon, nicknamed "Wee Sox," made his debut at the WDF World Championship at Lakeside last year and has now climbed to the top of the rankings after a double victory last weekend.
Lawrie secured his historic position by winning both the Slovak Classic and the Slovak Masters. In the final of the Slovak Classic, a silver-ranked event, he defeated Franko Giuliani 5-3. He followed that up with a 5-3 victory over Andras Borbely in the final of the bronze-ranked Slovak Masters. These wins add to his earlier success this season at the Scottish Classic and last year's triumphs at the British Open, Irish Classic, and Welsh Open in the seniors.
With 756 points, Lawrie now leads the WDF standings by 53 points over second-placed Jenson Walker, who is 19 years old. Leonard Gates sits in third place with 699 points, while Paul Krohne holds fourth place after his surprise win at the Dutch Open Darts in Assen, where he defeated Corné Groeneveld in the final. Groeneveld is the highest-ranked Dutchman in sixth place, with Jason Brandon between them in fifth.
The top 10 is completed by James Beeton, Alex Spellman, Neil Duff, and Jeff Smith. The highest-ranked Belgian is Francois Schweyen in seventeenth place with 352 points, just over half of Lawrie's tally. The full rankings list continues down to thirty-second place, including players like Dalibor Smolik and Andras Borbely.
