Chris Dobey has embarked on a fitness and diet overhaul, motivated in part by a desire not to be "the fat one amongst the friends" at Nathan Aspinall's upcoming stag do in Ibiza and wedding this year. The world number twelve, nicknamed "Hollywood," told Tungsten Tales that while the social event provided a humorous trigger, his core aim is to improve his stage performances by becoming physically stronger to endure long matchdays on the European Tour.
"I have struggled in the past. On the final day of a European Tour, it does take it out of you. I thought I had to change something," Dobey said. He emphasized that preparation is key, adding, "I'm starting to eat a bit healthier as well and just trying to put something right for a change. Hopefully it will pay off in my performances." Behind the lighthearted remark lies a serious plan to enhance his physical readiness and consistency.
Dobey's push comes as he seeks to add a European Tour title to his résumé, having reached just one final on that circuit previously. "100 per cent. I want to start winning these," he stated, reflecting on his strong floor form this season, which includes a Players Championship title. He aims to move beyond occasional semi-finals and finals to secure victories.
With a packed schedule and prize money to defend from a successful year a couple of years back, Dobey is focused on knuckling down and playing in all events, including ProTours. "I'm just going to play in everything," he affirmed, hoping his renewed approach will propel him back to where he believes he should be in the sport.
