VAN GERWEN AND VAN VEEN FIND SILVER LINING IN PREMIER LEAGUE EXITS, EYE UK OPEN AFTER 'PROPER NIGHT'S SLEEP'

Michael van Gerwen and Gian van Veen both suffered first-match exits on the fifth league night of Premier League Darts, but the Dutch duo struck a composed tone afterward, quickly shifting focus to the upcoming UK Open in Minehead. Van Gerwen fell to Luke Littler in a match he described as not high-quality, admitting, "This wasn't a high-quality match... It was just a tough match for both of us." The three-time world champion struggled with rhythm, attributing it to the ebb and flow of a long season, but saw an upside: "If you have to pick a moment for something like this to happen, this might be a good time. It means I can get a proper night's sleep instead of lying in bed for three hours overthinking it." He noted issues on stage, with darts landing differently than usual, calling it "an adjustment for both of us" in a nervy first match of the night.

Van Gerwen now faces a two-and-a-half-hour drive to Minehead for the UK Open, which he called "a very important tournament for me." He referenced a poor performance there two years ago, adding, "There's a lot for me to gain. That's basically the main thing right now." Fellow Dutchman Gian van Veen was equally blunt about his display, summarizing it as "Not much good. It was fun for him, but not for me." He pinpointed scoring power at key moments as the main issue, recounting a sequence where he threw 51 after his opponent started with 41, followed by visits without trebles and missed doubles, including three darts midway that let his opponent pull away.

Van Veen didn't credit his opponent highly, stating, "He wasn't great, but I was a bit worse today." He sensed something off before the match, saying, "I didn't feel great today. I walked onto the stage, but it just didn't feel top. My darts were also sitting in the board a bit differently than I'd hoped." Like Van Gerwen, he's heading straight to Minehead after the Premier League night, facing another two-and-a-half-hour drive. He quipped, "Every downside has its upside," though he added, "I would have liked to keep playing a bit longer here tonight. Then it'll have to be tomorrow in Minehead. That's how it is." Both players enter the UK Open in the fourth round on Friday night.
