Vincent van der Voort has emphasized that avoiding any physical setbacks is key to Michael van Gerwen returning to consistent top form. Speaking on the Darts Draait Door podcast, Van der Voort reflected on Van Gerwen's recent UK Open performance, where the Dutch star won his first two matches in Minehead but lost in the sixth round to James Wade, earning £12,500. Van der Voort noted that Van Gerwen's fourth place on the Order of Merit is under threat, stating, "Everyone is going to be breathing down Van Gerwen's neck this year, that shouldn't come as a surprise." He warned that if Van Gerwen fails to perform at major tournaments this year, he could start 2027 outside the world's top 16.
Van der Voort highlighted Van Gerwen's inconsistency, despite showing good patches and a throw that is "getting more and more on track." He said, "Now we really have to hope that for three or four months he doesn't run into anything. No hassle or issues with his body. That he can really work on his form and play every week. Right now it's very good and then very mediocre again. Those flyers he sometimes throws now can't happen to him. Those things have to go. He's also still missing too many chances." Van Gerwen started 2026 well with a title and a final on the World Series and a weekly win in Premier League Darts, but illness disrupted his rhythm, forcing him to withdraw from tournaments.
Van der Voort concluded that Van Gerwen needs a consistent build-up to the World Matchplay, scheduled for July 18-26, 2026, to regain his form and fend off challengers in the rankings.
