NIELS ZONNEVELD STUNS MICHAEL VAN GERWEN WITH HISTORIC VICTORY AT EUROPEAN DARTS TROPHY

NIELS ZONNEVELD STUNS MICHAEL VAN GERWEN WITH HISTORIC VICTORY AT EUROPEAN DARTS TROPHY

Niels Zonneveld produced a career-defining performance at the 2026 European Darts Trophy in Göttingen, defeating Michael van Gerwen for the first time in his career. The Dutchman secured the victory despite Van Gerwen, a three-time world champion, averaging over 107 in the match. Zonneveld maintained his composure throughout, posting a superb 104.46 average to clinch the win in a high-quality second-round clash.

After the match, Zonneveld expressed his elation, stating, "What can I say? You're absolutely right. I'm so happy with this win. I think I needed it." The 27-year-old highlighted his growing confidence, explaining that he now believes "I know I can do it," and described feeling "really happy right now, to be honest." He added that during the contest, "I played really well. I felt so comfortable and so focused," which helped him avoid being overwhelmed by his opponent's reputation.

Interestingly, Zonneveld revealed he paid little attention to the statistics during the match, saying, "I'm happy with the win, but during the match I didn't think about the averages." The atmosphere in Göttingen played a role, with the German crowd responding enthusiastically to the high standard of play, and Zonneveld visibly feeding off that energy. The win broke a previous losing streak against Van Gerwen, marking a significant breakthrough for Zonneveld.

There is little time to celebrate, however, as Zonneveld now faces another Dutchman, Jermaine Wattimena, in the third round. Historically, this matchup has not been favorable for Zonneveld, with Wattimena winning six of their seven previous meetings. Looking ahead, Zonneveld smiled and said, "I hope so. I hope this crowd is behind me," suggesting Göttingen could again prove a turning point in his career.
