Dutch darts enjoyed a strong weekend at the European Darts Trophy in Göttingen, where Wessel Nijman claimed the title. In the podcast Darts Draait Door, Vincent van der Voort reflected on the tournament, noting a shift at the top of Dutch darts as a new generation announced itself. "It was a truly fantastic weekend for the Netherlands," said Van der Voort. While established names like Michael van Gerwen, Gian van Veen, and Danny Noppert remained relatively quiet, other Dutchmen such as Niels Zonneveld, Wessel Nijman, and Dirk van Duijvenbode went deep into the tournament.
Wessel Nijman captured his first European Tour title in emphatic fashion, with Van der Voort stating, "No one really came close. He just blew everyone away." He praised Nijman's clinical performance and confidence, comparing it to a rare level of dominance he had seen before with Jamie Hughes. Nijman is now closing in on the top 16 in the world, with Van der Voort adding, "He's already very close to the top 16 and he'll get in there." However, Van der Voort noted the number of Dutch Euro Tour winners remains limited, mentioning Dirk van Duijvenbode as one who came close but fell short.
Niels Zonneveld also impressed, reaching the semi-finals and recording a convincing victory over Michael van Gerwen. Van der Voort said, "I think Niels played a truly fantastic tournament," though he lost to Nijman, who "may have played the best tournament of his career." Zonneveld's scoring stood out, but he faced pressure from opponents hitting high standards.
Concerns were raised over Michael van Gerwen, who posted high averages but missed key moments. "Averages don't tell the whole story," Van der Voort said. He revealed telling Van Gerwen, "No one is afraid of you anymore," explaining that opponents no longer fear his best form. "Everyone now thinks: if he has an off day, he's there for the taking. And that happens regularly." Van der Voort concluded that Van Gerwen must take the initiative to restore his aura, saying, "He has to force it himself again. He'll have to work hard for it."
