CALLS FOR PHILIP BRZEZINSKI AS MASTERCALLER GROW LOUDER AFTER BERLIN DEBUT

The role of Master of Ceremonies within the Professional Darts Corporation is back under scrutiny following Philip Brzezinski's appearance during the Premier League night in Berlin. The Englishman made his debut on the biggest stage there and immediately impressed with a fresh, energetic presentation, reigniting debate about the position.

With the departure of the iconic John McDonald, the PDC had to look for a new permanent voice, a role filled this season by Lewis Jones. However, Brzezinski's performance has sparked growing support for a rotation system instead of a single caller. Former professional Matthew Edgar pointed to similar developments in other areas of the sport, noting on the OLBG Podcast: "A lot of roles are in darts if you look at the commentary, that is very shared, whether that is legal cover. Then you have an afternoon team and an evening team. Emma Paton doesn't cover everything at the World Championship." Edgar added that it's not unthinkable the MC role moves in that direction too, suggesting: "I wouldn't be surprised if we move into a world where we see a dual MC role."

The debate comes as Jones has faced criticism since his appointment, particularly on social media, with a few slips and incorrect announcements—including misnaming tournaments and players' achievements—widely highlighted. Even so, there is understanding within the darts world for his situation, with insiders noting that succeeding McDonald is seen as a thankless task and that Jones, like his predecessor, needs time to fully grow into the role.

Brzezinski's strong showing in Berlin, with his energetic style well received, demonstrated room for renewal and brought a different dynamic to the arena. According to Edgar, that mix of different styles could be an added value, allowing the sport to evolve and appeal to a broader audience through multiple voices.
