Nathan Aspinall and Michael van Gerwen are expected in Munich on Sunday for a Euro Tour event, but the two world-class players first appeared at an exhibition tournament in Newcastle on Friday night. Alongside the likes of Vincent van der Voort and Robert Thornton, they took part in the annual Davey Dodds Memorial Trophy, an event named after the late former darter Davey Dodds.
Eight players competed in total. In the quarterfinals, Vincent van der Voort beat Cameron Anderson 3-1, while Michael van Gerwen posted the same scoreline against Andy Lynn. Nathan Aspinall proved too strong for Alan Bell with a 3-1 win, and Robert Thornton completed the last four by edging Dylan Glazier 3-2.
The semifinals offered little drama. Van Gerwen swept aside Van der Voort 3-0, and Aspinall did not drop a leg against Thornton, also winning 3-0. Aspinall then won the final 3-1 against Van Gerwen to clinch the Davey Dodds Memorial Trophy at The Fed in Newcastle.
