Patrik Kovacs produced a stunning upset on the opening day of the 2026 German Darts Grand Prix in Munich, defeating former Masters champion Joe Cullen 6-3 at the Zenith Arena. The 29-year-old Hungarian, who had lost all seven of his previous European Tour matches, sealed victory with consecutive winning legs to claim his first-ever win on the circuit.
An emotional Kovacs reflected on the breakthrough moment in an on-stage interview, stating, "It's unbelievable! I tried to play my game. I was really nervous, it's incredible to win here." He acknowledged Cullen's off-form performance, adding, "Joe [Cullen] didn't play his best game, and I hit my doubles, I'm really happy." The win also fulfilled a personal dream for Kovacs, who said, "It's the first time I have won a game on the European Tour, it was my dream to win a game here."
With this victory, Kovacs made history by becoming the first Hungarian to win a European Tour match outside of Hungary. His reward is a second-round tie against former European champion Ross Smith, where he will again enter as the underdog.
