“IF I NEVER REFEREE AGAIN, I’LL TAKE THAT MOMENT TO MY GRAVE” – OWEN BINKS ON UNFORGETTABLE POLAND DARTS OPEN DEBUT

Owen Binks made his Euro Tour debut as a referee at the Poland Darts Open, an experience he says exceeded anything he expected. The debut came in a chaotic fashion—after working in Glasgow at Premier League Darts as a spotter for the host broadcaster, he had to travel to Krakow via a taxi to Edinburgh due to no direct flights. His journey was marred by a three-hour-and-ten-minute delay at passport control, causing him to miss an entire session, and his luggage did not arrive until Sunday night, just before the final.

Once at the arena, Binks admitted to feeling very nervous and experiencing “imposter syndrome,” especially given he was replacing George Noble, whom he called “the GOAT” and “a legend of the game.” He also noted the pressure of joining an elite group of officials like Russ Bray, Paul Hinks, and Hugh Kirk. His main worries were making a mistake on his debut and how he would sound, fearing that a slip-up could end his career. However, once he stepped on stage and faced the board, he felt settled, describing the crowd noise as incredible and saying, “Right, game on now.”

Binks’ first match included a viral moment involving Connor Scott, who joked that “the number ring isn’t straight,” leading Binks to check and adjust it, only to realize it was fine. He later learned he would referee the final between Luke Littler and Gian van Veen, which featured a nine-darter. Binks described the physical thrill of the moment, noting his chest was thumping and he shouted “Game shot!” as loud as he could, nearly fainting. He said, “If I never referee again for some reason, I’ll still take that moment to the grave with me.” Additionally, he was introduced on air with a Jar Jar Binks reference, which surprised him but left him considering keeping the nickname.
