Gerwyn Price has jokingly vowed revenge on Wessel Nijman after losing the 2026 European Darts Trophy final 8-3 in Göttingen. The Welshman spoke glowingly about the 25-year-old Dutchman, who claimed his first European Tour title with a convincing victory at the event. Price acknowledged Nijman's brilliance, stating, "I didn't play my best in the final, but take nothing away from Wessel, he was fantastic."
Price's path to the final was arduous, marking his third ranking final of 2026. He overcame Danny Noppert, Dirk van Duijvenbode, and Damon Heta in succession on a tough final day. His last-16 win against Noppert was particularly dramatic, as Price narrowly avoided elimination by surviving a match dart. A day earlier, he impressed with a 106.7 average in a win over Joe Cullen to secure his last-16 spot. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Van Duijvenbode 6-3, followed by a tense 7-5 semifinal victory over Heta.
After such an intense day, Price admitted his energy was depleted heading into the final, saying, "It's been a long day. I ran out of gas in the end." In the decider, Nijman produced a high level throughout, giving Price few chances. Price noted that Nijman seems to find his top game whenever they meet, adding, "Every time I play against Wessel, he plays brilliantly against me. He's been brilliant all year, he played fantastic darts today, but I will get my own back one day!"
Price will have another chance to win a European Tour event next weekend, as the Belgian Darts Open gets underway in Wieze on Friday. He won the inaugural edition of this tournament in 2020 by beating Michael Smith 8-3 in the final.
