Michael van Gerwen has expressed frustration over missed chances in the current Premier League Darts season, stating, "I think I could have a few more points, but that's how the Premier League is." The three-time world champion made these comments in a preview on PDC.TV, reflecting on his performance after eight nights of competition.
Van Gerwen recently reached a nightly final in Berlin, where he defeated Luke Humphries 6-3 and Josh Rock 6-3 before losing 6-4 to Luke Littler. This marked his third final in the first eight nights of the season, having won the opening night in Newcastle and finished as runner-up on Night Two. Despite this, he sits fourth in the standings with thirteen points, having missed one night due to illness, and is on the right side of the line halfway through the league phase but needs to keep collecting points to secure a Play-Offs spot.
Looking ahead, Van Gerwen faces Stephen Bunting in Manchester on Thursday night, with Bunting seventh in the standings with seven points. A win over Bunting could benefit Van Gerwen, as number three Gerwyn Price and number five Luke Humphries are facing each other, potentially allowing him to pull away from fifth place or overtake Price in the table. Van Gerwen added, "The feeling of winning is amazing, and the feeling of losing is always tough. I am always critical of myself, but to beat Luke Humphries in a direct contest last week gave me a lot of joy and a good feeling. I feel there's more in the tank, and now I need to show it."
